Eric Duell, a former photojournalist, now uses Internet and social media analytics to help the E. W. Scripps Co. enhance its data storytelling capabilities.
Duell is Vice President of Data Analytics and Intelligence for the E. W. Scripps Company, a major media operation owning 33 television and 34 radio stations across the country.

As a 1995 Ohio University graduate, Duell started his career as a newspaper photojournalist. He won an honorable mention award from the Associated Press Society of Ohio for spot news photography.

While at Ohio University, he studied video production but also specialized in political science, German and corollary studies in art and film.

He returned to campus as part of the 10th annual Scripps Day in the Scripps College of Communication and Duell visited with WOUB’s Tom Hodson.

In his new position with Scripps, Duell uses analytics to identify new market opportunities for the company. He also enhances storytelling capabilities and provides insights supporting the company’s strategies concerning content and product innovation.

Before joining Scripps, he was the head of analytics and intelligence at Data Intensity in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He also worked for Cincinnati’s largest advertising agency. He was the executive in charge of a documentary series about how families live around the world and how to teach Mandarin Chinese to children.

Duell currently is an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati in the Carl H. Lindner College of Business. He co-created a special curriculum and teaches graduate courses in data visualization.
