Ohio Swimming and Diving Drops Home Meet to Akron

The Ohio swimming and diving team hosted the Akron Zips, the 2015 Mid-American Conference champions, in its first home meet of the season on Friday. The Bobcats fell just short of a victory, losing to the Zips 167-133.

Freshman Corrin Van Lanen swam well for the Bobcats, achieving her third-straight victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.51. She finished her 100-yard freestyle in second place, touching in at 51.76.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, freshman Ana Henderson took the lead, finishing in 10:27.66. Senior Steph Gyurke followed closely behind and placed third with a time of 10:37.74. Henderson also led the Bobcats in the 500-yard freestyle, coming in at 5:06.83. The Bobcats took second and third in the same race when juniors Bianca Hauzer and Josie Barker finished their close race, touching in at 5:09.18 and 5:10.16.

Junior Laura Dawson also brought home three victories for the Bobcats. Dawson placed first in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:00.57 and the 200-yard IM at 2:05.78. In the 200-yard freestyle, Dawson swam a close race and finished at 1:52.14, just out-touching Akron’s Madison Meyers by .07 seconds. Barker came in third in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:55.84.

Senior diver Haleigh Bartlett placed first in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 317.10. Her teammate, sophomore Karissa Conner, finished in fifth place, scoring in at 182.85.

The Bobcats’ 400-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle A relays both finished in second place. In the 400-yard medley relay, Dawson, Mackenzie Hornstra, Carrie Dukes , and Van Lanen finished with a time of 3:53.52. Addy Ferguson, Haley Clark, Barker, and Van Lanen finished the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:35.38.

The Bobcats’ next meet is on Nov. 13, when they will take on Marshall. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. at the Ohio University Aquatic Center.
