Head coach Matt Combs couldn’t ask for a better start from his Vikings – literally. Vinton County (4-0, 2-0 TVC-Ohio) remains undefeated after knocking off its first two conference opponents in convincing fashion.

Jordan Albright’s 32-point performance led the Vikings in a 83-48 rout of Athens on Dec. 8. The win ended the Bulldogs’ 23-game in-conference winning streak.

“He’s played in 70 varsity basketball games,” Combs said. “He’s pretty comfortable by now. He’s able to get to the hole better. “

Vinton County faced a tough test on Dec. 11 against Alexander. The Vikings finished the 2014-15 season tied with the Spartans for second in the TVC-Ohio.

Vinton County held a lead for nearly the whole game and sent its home fans happy with a 66-47 victory. Tristan Bartoe led the Vikings with 15 points. Chase Wood added 14 points and Bo McIntire finished with 10.

Mason Chapman kept the Spartans in the game with 15 points on five 3-pointers. It was Chapman’s first game of the season.

The wins put Vinton County atop the TVC-Ohio in a deadlock with Meigs and Nelsonville-York.

“For us to get ‘em early is big,” Combs said. “But there’s 10 league games left and a lot of teams playing well right now.”

The Vikings travel next week, facing the aforementioned Buckeyes on Tuesday, Dec. 15 and non-conference opponent Logan on Friday, Dec. 19.
