CLEVELAND (AP) — Many small police departments operating within Cleveland will get some of the training Cleveland officers are required to receive through a federal consent decree.

Cleveland.com reports city police officials have offered to include the departments in the extra training because they want people to know they’ll be treated the same in Cleveland, regardless of the department.

The settlement with the U.S. Justice Department doesn’t apply to smaller transit, hospital and university departments in the city. But experts say it’s smart to include them in the training.

Cleveland Deputy Chief Joellen O’Neill says officers working together in the city should all be on the same page.

The decree was reached after a Justice Department investigation concluded Cleveland police officers too often use excessive force and violate people’s civil rights.
