< < Back to nelsonville-york-lady-buckeyes-dec-12-20After a 4-1 start to the season, the Lady Buckeyes entered the week ready to cement themselves as frontrunners in the TVC-Ohio.
A dominant road win 66-27 against Wellston on Dec. 14 served as a nice foundation and showcased the team’s offensive chemistry. Nelsonville-York outscored Wellston 25-9 in the second quarter and kept their foot on the gas the rest of the way.
The Lady Buckeyes ran a balanced attack with three players scoring in double figures: Kaitlyn Hurd with 17 points, Samantha Taylor with 16 points, and Jessie Addis with 13 points. Addis was also able to contribute five rebounds, five steals, and two assists.
“The ball was moving all over the court tonight (Dec. 14) which got everyone involved and on the same page, something we are going to need throughout the season,” Whiteman said.
Following the win, N-Y regrouped, preparing to face the undefeated Alexander Lady Spartans on Dec. 18. The matchup had TVC-Ohio championship implications. Understanding this, Addis used it to fuel her 29-point performance.
Addis proved valuable down the stretch, scoring the Lady Buckeyes’ final eight points, including a corner three that tied the game at 49 with 20 seconds left in the game. In overtime, the Lady Buckeyes controlled the ball leading to a 59-54 victory over the Lady Spartans.
“She’s just a warrior, we’re never out of it as long as she is on the court,” Whiteman said, praising the sophomore’s performance. .
The Lady Buckeyes’ defense also performed well, constantly pressuring the Lady Spartans. N-Y held Alexander standout Leah Richardson to 15 points, shooting 4 for 20.
The Lady Buckeyes (6-1) now stand with a 4-1 conference record; good enough to hold a top spot in the conference. N-Y seeks to improve its record, hosting Trimble and Fairfield Union on Dec. 21 and 23 respectively.
