Waterford Dominates on Wahama’s Floor
< < Back toUndefeated and state No. 1 Waterford (13-0, 11-0) rolled into Mason and worked easily against the winless Wahama Lady White Falcons (0-11, 0-10), winning 67-12.
Waterford had no problem working quickly against the slower Wahama team. The Lady Wildcats forced more Wahama turnovers on Thursday (26) than Wahama has total points against Waterford this season (16).
Waterford focused on fundamentals, working bench players into the game, and the zone offense. The Lady Wildcats passed smoothly and were unselfish, oftentimes passing the ball 10 or more times around the zone before taking a shot. Waterford shot 56.5% from the field, helped by five players who did not miss a shot. Regan Porter worked inside for Waterford and led the team with 12 points and helped Alli Kern sneak in for seven rebounds.
The White Falcons were able to triple their point total from a previous game against Waterford, but the scoring was split between only two players and the 18% from the field did not help come close in the game.
The future for Wahama (0-11) does not look great with back-to-back games at Miller. Miller beat Wahama 62-23 earlier in the season.
Waterford will next search for a statement win against a tough Alexander (11-3) squad that has some momentum of its own. This is the first time Waterford has been ranked No. 1 and they are not looking to squander that honor.
“It’s a great honor. We’ve never been ranked No. 1 before. We’ve been as high as No. 6, though,” Waterford coach Jerry Close said. “But it’s early and there is a lot of season left, but we are going to try and hold that spot. A lot of things can happen but we want to be No. 1 at the end of the season.”
Waterford went undefeated last season until losing in the State Championship. They graduated only one senior from last year’s team and have kept that team momentum moving.
