Vinton County Dominates Against Athens< < Back to
After Athens’ Sophie Miller found herself in four trouble in the first quarter, Vinton County ran away with a 50-24 victory over the Lady Bulldogs (5-15).
Vinton County outperformed Athens, using its height advantage to nab 15 offensive rebounds and drive to the hoop. The Lady Vikings shot well throughout the night, but especially from behind the arc. The team went 7 for 13, with Michaela Puckett and Darian Radabaugh leading with two 3-pointers each.
Jalen Hale led the Lady Vikings with 20 points and three blocks against Athens. Vinton County dominated the ball and the boards. The Lady Vikings move to 16-6 to finish their season.
The matchup was the Lady Bulldogs final regular-season game and senior night. All four seniors put up at least two points on the night, including Claire DeBruin. DeBruin has been out due to a concussion since Jan. 7, Athens’ last meeting with Vinton County.
Sophomore Haley Wiseman also scored her first varsity points with a layup.
Senior Alexis McCollum lead the team with seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Taylor Gregory was just behind McCollum, scoring five points, put up five boards and forced two turnovers.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 8 for 35 on the night and struggled the most with ball control.
Athens next matchup comes Feb. 8 against Gallia Academy in a play-in game for the Division II tournament. Vinton County also plays its next game in the tournament on Feb. 11 against Meigs.
