Guest Artists, Students Featured at Winter Dance Concert
< < Back toThe Dance Division of Ohio University’s School of Dance, Film and Theater will present its Winter Dance Concert Feb. 19-20 at 7:30 p.m. in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. One of the Dance Division’s largest annual productions, this concert features original choreographed works by faculty and guest artists, performed by undergraduate students from the Dance Division.
Six works are featured in the concert, with choreography by guest artists Kyle Abraham, Anna Sullivan and Lisa Ford Moulton, as well as OU Dance Division faculty John Bohuslawsky, Nathan Andary and Ani Javian.
The show is comprised of eclectic contemporary dance works featuring a wide range of musical genres, and a movement vocabulary ranging from superhero strength to tender, intimate subtlety for which students have been preparing since October.
“Working with guest artists is a tremendous honor, and an illuminating experience for our undergraduate students. While we as faculty members present distinct points of view, the world of contemporary dance outside the university is even more diverse in style and expression, and it is an absolute necessity for our dancers to have these experiences while in college,” said Ani Javian, visiting assistant professor in the Dance Division. “These opportunities nourish their artistry as performers and creators, and expose them to some of the possibilities upon graduation.”
Guest artist, American choreographer and recent MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham is a dancer probing the relationship between identity and personal history through a unique hybrid of traditional and vernacular dance styles that speaks to a new generation. His choreographic works have been performed by both his company, Kyle Abraham/Abraham.in.Motion (founded in 2006), and others.
Guest artist Anna Sullivan is the artistic director and choreographer of the multi-media dance theater project, Anna and The Annadroids. Sullivan received a Bachelors of Specialized Studies in choreography, performance and cultural anthropology from Ohio University in 2003. Her works have been presented at the New York International Fringe Festival three times, and received multiple project grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.
Guest artist Lisa Ford Moulton was a member of the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company in Salt Lake City and worked with the Loose Gravel Dance Company and Contemporary Danceworks before joining the faculty at Ohio University in 1995. Among many other honors, she has received two Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships and the Ohioan Citation for Dance. She has taught at Factory Street Studio in Athens for the past four years.
Admission to the concert is $12, $9 for children under 18. Students with valid OU ID are admitted free, made possible through the support of Arts for Ohio. For reservations call the ticket office at 740-593-1780 or visit the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium ticket office.
