MORAINE, Ohio (AP) – Environmental officials have taken soil samples at 25 private properties near a park in Ohio that’s closed over concerns that lead-contaminated dust could become airborne.

The latest samples will be tested for lead levels.

The Dayton Daily News reports Environmental Protection Agency officials conducted the sampling after elevated levels of lead were found at Layer Park in Miami Township.

The Ohio EPA did park testing in 2013. But the agency says it didn’t know the park was the site of a former shooting range until township officials told them this year.

The agency retested park soil earlier this year and confirmed the high readings. Officials say the park closed for the season in December and hasn’t reopened due to the lead levels.

The U.S. EPA is overseeing the case.
