COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says he is running for governor.

The 69-year-old Republican confirmed his less-than-secret plans after a reporter overheard him discussing it with a Dayton charter school official Thursday. DeWine told the Dayton Daily News the discussion was confidential – but the substance was true.

Spokeswoman Lisa Hackley says DeWine hasn’t been hiding the fact that he plans to run for governor in 2018.

DeWine says he’s focused on supporting Republican candidates running this fall.

He’ll face a likely three-way primary contest with Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and Secretary of State Jon Husted.

Republican Gov. John Kasich is prevented by term limit rules from running again.
