COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s governor has vetoed a bill that could have made it harder for people to get a court order to keep polling places open longer on Election Day.

The bill would have created a process for state courts to follow when considering whether to grant a last-minute extension of voting hours.

People seeking court relief would have to pay a cash bond to keep the polls open. A judge setting that amount must weigh the total cost of keeping the polling places open, which could be in the tens of thousands of dollars.

In his statement, Republican Gov. John Kasich said he agrees with many aspects of the bill. But he said the measure goes too far in prohibiting judges from using their discretion to waive the bond requirement.
