COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A proposed constitutional amendment to impose term limits on Ohio Supreme Court justices and to remove special legal protections provided to state lawmakers and their staffs has cleared its initial legal hurdle.

Republican Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says a petition submitted by the proposal’s backers on Oct. 28 was certified Monday. The action indicates they included the required 1,000 valid signatures and presented a “fair and truthful” summary of their issue.

The first part of the proposal would preclude judges who had served nine or more consecutive years on the high court from being re-elected or appointed. Its second element would provide that all state laws apply equally to members and employees of the General Assembly.

The proposal heads next to the state Ballot Board.
