The Belpre Golden Eagles’ fourth quarter comeback fell short in a 54-40 loss to the Southern Tornadoes.

Southern allowed only two Belpre free throws in the third quarter and Belpre had more turnovers than field goals attempted in the quarter. The Tornadoes went into the fourth quarter up 43-23.  Down 20 points, the Golden Eagles marched towards the end of the game.

The Golden Eagles, led by Cole Knotts’ eight points in the fourth, went on a 13-2 run to begin the quarter.  Belpre was sluggish but in the fourth started forcing turnovers and converting possessions into buckets.  Rebounds also started to go Belpre’s way which was not happening in the first three quarters.

Belpre got to within nine, but did not finish the comeback.  Southern gave up just two points to Belpre in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Southern began the game with a 5-0 run before Belpre took Deijon Bedgood off the bench.  Bedgood tied the game 5-5 and scored five of his team-leading 13 points in the first quarter.

Dylan Smith led the Tornadoes with 16 points and Blake Johnson followed with 12.  Crenson Rogers had a near double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points.

Belpre (5-12) will try to scrape a tough win at Eastern on Friday.

Southern (7-9) ripped away a four-game losing streak with the victory over Belpre.  The Tornadoes will be at South Gallia on Friday.
