It’s been said that once you listen to enough music, you can hear the difference between something that has been recorded analog versus a song recorded by digital means.

Bernie Nau, the owner and producer at Peach Fork Studios, would know, being that he is not only a member of the Recording Academy but also a voting member of the Grammy Foundation.

“A lot of people say that analog sounds better,” said Nau. “But I wouldn’t say that it necessarily sounds ‘better,’ it just sounds ‘different.’”

Peach Fork, which is relatively isolated here in Southeast Ohio, has both analog and digital recording equipment. Perhaps it could be said that the studio’s claim to fame is it’s two-inch analog tape machine, which historically recorded The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” Waylon Jenning’s “Black on Black” and other notable tunes.

On Saturday, May 13, The Union will hold a Peach Fork Studios showcase, featuring the likes of Megan Bee, J.D. Hutchinson and Realbilly Jive, Hex Net, Supernobody, Come On Come Ons, Chris Biester, and Wilted American Romance.

The showcase features a wide variety of genres and general musical aesthetics – everything from the deeply American roots music of acclaimed Athens songwriter J.D. Hutchison and his mighty band (which includes a number of notable Athens-based musicians, including vocalist Mimi Hart,) to the unapologetic rock ‘n’ roll of Hex Net.

Doors for the show open at 7 p.m., and there will be a $5 cover.
