Wellston Ends Skid Against River Valley
< < Back to wellston-ends-skid-against-river-valleyWellston is a running team, and that was the gameplan again Friday against River Valley, as the Golden Rockets came away with the 28-7 win over the Raiders.
The Wellston Golden Rockets (4-2) used their running game to run the clock and score touchdowns against a struggling defense. A 14-yard rushing touchdown early in the game by Rylan Molihan gave the Golden Rockets an early 6-0 lead.
The River Valley Raiders (2-4) would try to make a comeback in the first half led by senior quarterback Patrick Brown. With 7:48 left in the second quarter, Brown connected with Jarret McCarley for a 14-yard touchdown, and with an extra point took a 7-6 lead. Patrick Brown had 88 passing yards and also added in 48 yards on the ground in the first half.
The Golden Rockets would come back though, as a drive to end the half started at their own 26 yard line. They would hand the ball off to their running back, Travis Jayjohn, as he ran for 70 of the 74 yards on the drive, including the four yard touchdown and the two point conversion to give the Golden Rockets a 14-7 lead. Travis Jayjohn had another great first half, as he had 111 yards on the ground, including the touchdown, and also had a 19 yard reception as well.
Wellston would continue to run the ball well in the second half, as they would score two more touchdowns on the ground. Wellston had a total of 398 offensive yards and more than 300 of those yards came from the rushing duo of Jayjohn and Molihan. Jayjohn finished the game with 24 carries for 217 yards and one touchdown while Molihan had 9 carries for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
Yet again, the story for River Valley was that its senior quarterback was the whole offense. Patrick Brown went 17/27 with 151 yards one touchdown and one interception through the air and also added 23 carries for 86 yards on the ground.
After this week’s 28-7 win, the Wellston Golden Rockets will look for their third straight win next week when they travel to Boston Field to take on the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes (6-0).
The River Valley Raiders will look to halt their current three-game losing streak when they take on the Alexander Spartans (1-5).
