Lady Bulldogs Attack the Lady Tigers in Three Sets

The Waverly Lady Tigers traveled to take on the Athens Lady Bulldogs in the opening round of the playoffs. This could not have been more of an evenly matched setup, with Athens coming in with a 17-5 record, and Waverly having a 13-8 record. The Lady Bulldogs chased the Lady Tigers out of McAfee Gymnasium.

The Waverly Lady Tigers proved to be their own worst enemy tonight with countless errors throughout the match, eight within the first set. Lady Tigers showed grit in the first set falling closely behind to the Lady bulldogs 26-24. Athens Head Coach Haley Dake stated, “My girls came out a little too relaxed,” seeing as they are not used to tight sets.

Serena Smith dug her team a victory with 15 digs in the match. Her twin sister followed this up with 21 assists. The duo gave the Lady Bulldogs an edge to win the second set against Waverly.

The Lady Tigers pounced in the third set with two early aces giving them a 6-4 lead. Athens pushed through, giving them the lead late in the set. The Lady Bulldogs’ senior Gabby Carey tallied six kills in the final set and 16 for the game. Athens powered through in the final set, trouncing the Lady Tigers 25-21.

The Lady Bulldogs sweep of Waverly propels them into the Sectional final against the winner of Gallia and Vinton County. For Waverly, this marks the end of the road as they finish with a record 13-9.
