The best way to learn anything, for most folks, is just to do it.

This is no different for the students of Hocking College’s music management program, who have spent the past several months planning and organizing a three-night live music event, known as Benefest, to gain experience in their desired field of work and to raise money for local organizations like Stuart’s Opera House’s After School Music Program and The Gathering Place. This is the seventh year that Benefest has taken place in Athens.

Kicking off the final installments for the year on Friday, December 1 are Gudger, Slackluster, Pretty As You Please, Mosquito Coast, and special guest, Power 105’s DJ Barticus at The Union.

Saturday, December 2 marks the final portion of the event for 2017, with the Big Cover Up at The Union. The night will feature performances by some of Athens’ favorite local acts, taking on the repertoire of the likes of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers (Water Witches), Pavement (Smizmar), The Replacements (Breakers), and Neil Young (Boot Bandits). Special guest MC Reverend Littlehouse will be guiding the night’s festivities.

“It is a diverse line-up of performers playing for some great local organizations that do so much for our area. It is also a showcase of the creative hardworking students in our program,” said Scott Winland, the coordinator and lead instructor of the music management program at Hocking. “These folks have done an amazing job organizing the event this year!”
