Alexander’s tough defense and quick offence was the game plan throughout this matchup as they defeated the Federal Hocking Lancers in dominating fashion 56-31.  The Lady Spartans were able to force 14 turnovers which lead to fast break points and helped transition them into offense.

Federal Hocking was unable to find their rhythm as they went 36 for 13 from the field.  The Lady Lancers started off slow only putting up 8 points in the first half compared to Alexander who scored 35.

The Lady Lancers passed the ball well but were not able to knock down open shots and take advantage of mistakes made by the Lady Spartan defense.

Another key for Alexander was both offensive and defensive rebounding.  The Lady Spartans were able to get second chance points off offensive rebounds ultimately deflating the Lady Lancers defense.

First year head coach Jeff Girenstead is changing the playing style of the Lady Spartans this season.

“In the past, it was geared more towards the offence, now our defense is setting up our offense.”

After the game when asked what aspect did he want the Spartans to improve on, he answered simply by saying communication.

“We want to be great every night at defense and you can’t do that without communicating with each other.  Right now, that’s our biggest challenge.”

That defense sparked playmakers for Alexander.  Top performers for the Lady Spartans were Rachel Richardson who led all scorers with 17 points and pulled in three rebounds.  Not far behind was McKena Rice who scored 15 points but also dominated the boards with 6 rebounds.

These two players have stepped up as leaders of this Lady Spartans team according to Coach Girenstead.

“McKena and Rachel have really stepped up in the leadership role. You can see McKena’s work ethic when she plays, first one in there to get a rebound but also the first one to the other end of the court to try to get a layup.”

For the Lady Lancers, their leading scorer was Audrey Blake who scored ten points and recorded one steal.

Alexander improves to (2-0) and will host Vinton County on December 7th.  As for the Lady Lancers they drop their season opener but hope to bounce back as they travel to Waterford.
