CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – Gov. Jim Justice says federal authorities have approved West Virginia’s plan for improving student success, whose long-term goals include significantly raising overall academic proficiency over the next decade.

The West Virginia Department of Education’s Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA, Plan targets raising overall proficiency from 47.5 percent to 73.8 percent by the end of the 2029-2030 school year.

It also calls for sharper focus on education leading to employment and stimulating the state economy, noting that about 80 percent of the fastest-growing occupations in West Virginia will require vocational training, associate’s degrees or a bachelor’s degree.

The plan notes that West Virginia’s high school graduation rate has risen to nearly 90 percent, setting a long-term goal of 95 percent.
