Lady Lancers Win Third Straight Over Southern
< < Back to lady-lancers-win-third-straight-southernThe Lady Lancers took home their 11th win of the season against the Southern Tornadoes with a final score of 51-41.
This is the Lancer’s third win in a row since falling to the Lady Wildcats last week. After that loss, Coach Tolson mentioned that they played very well on defense.
Their defensive play against the Tornadoes was no different. Their zone defense was difficult to penetrate, which kept Southern in tight, high pressure situations that ultimately lead to turnovers Federal Hocking capitalized on. Fed Hock forced Southern to commit 17 turnovers in the first three quarters alone.
The Lancers also did not let southern have many easy shots and were the first under the basket to snag defensive rebounds to break away down the court to score.
Both teams played tough and physical. Fed Hock committed 16 fouls Southern committed 18 fouls. Emma Beha in particular took a few tough fouls and Brittanie Jackson took a good charge to stop a scoring play for Southern.
Not only did Fed Hock’s defense prove to be successful, but their offense was successful as well. Hannah Dunfee was on a roll with three-points having made four three-pointers for all of her points for the night.
The Lancers were connecting passes, and their ball movement opened up space on all sides of the court. Paige Tolson’s speed was unstoppable. She had fast breaks down the court and connected with her teammates for scoring plays.
The score doesn’t exactly reflect their offensive flow because when they got to the basket, they were not always getting the ball in. The same was for Southern. They had a few fast breaks and were able to find the open man in the paint, but had trouble finishing.
Fed Hock had a few careless passes here and there, but they still kept their turnovers to a minimum. Paige Tolson had three turnovers, but was also the third top scorer behind Kylie Tabler (7 points) with six points.
However, the Lancers did not push the tempo until the second quarter. Southern was still in the game after the first quarter. The score was 12-9 at the end of the first, but then Southern could not keep up and were down by 12 points at half.
It was not until the last quarter where Southern began to match Fed Hock’s tempo and had a few shining moments as well. Josie Cundiff had two three-pointers within minutes in the fourth and three total in the game.
She was also Southern’s top scorer of the night with a total of fourteen points. She is followed by Phoenix Cleland with 10, and Baylee Wolfe with 7. Southern began to have better ball handling in the fourth quarter, but was not enough.
This is Fed Hock’s second win against Southern this season. Their last game against Southern had a final score of 48-32. Southern will host Wahama next week and The Lancer’s will try to continue their win streak at Belpre.
