MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia University says its recent fundraising campaign collected contributions of more than $1.2 billion.

The school said in a news release that the campaign, which ended Dec. 31, included more than 90,000 donors and was the largest private fundraising campaign in university history.

The release said the fundraising total is more than $200 million over the campaign’s $1 billion goal.

The campaign was launched publicly in 2012 with a goal of $750 million, which was exceeded more than a year before the deadline, so the campaign was extended to last December with the new $1 billion goal. That mark was reached in the summer of 2016.

The release said campaign donations established 844 student scholarships, 57 chairs and professorships and 227 funds to assist research efforts.
