Algeria’s mass expulsions at its southern border have picked up  since the European Union renewed pressure on North African countries to deal with migrants before they even make it to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea. In the past 14 months 13,000 migrants have been “dropped off” in the Sahara Desert.

The International Organization for Migration has estimated that for every migrant known to have died crossing the Mediterranean, as many as two are lost in the desert, potentially upwards of 30,000 since 2014.

Algeria calls the allegations a “malicious campaign” intented to inflame neighboring countries.
