Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville welcomes three great acts for a special Backstage Show with Waxahatchee, Night Shop, and Anna St. Louis on Thursday, September 13 at 8 p.m. The audience will sit on the stage with the performers for an intimate concert experience right on the Stuart’s stage.

An evening of music led by Waxahatchee (Merge Records) the ever-shifting musical project of Katie Crutchfield whose newest release, Great Thunder, follows up on her acclaimed release Out in the Storm. Joining Waxahatchee will be Night Shop and Anna St. Louis.

Katie Crutchfield’s musical project Waxahatchee returns with the Great Thunder EP. Featuring a collection of songs written with now-dormant experimental recording group Great Thunder while Crutchfield was also writing the Waxahatchee albums Cerulean Salt and Ivy Tripp, the original recordings have mostly faded into obscurity. Unearthing and re-imagining them with producer Brad Cook at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio in Wisconsin was a cathartic experience, she says. On the heels of last year’s critically acclaimed Out in the Storm, Crutchfield found herself looking to take a sharp turn away from the more rock-oriented influences of her recent records towards her more folk and country roots.

“I would say that it is a complete 180 from the last record: super stripped-down, quiet, and with me performing solo, it’s a throwback to how I started,” writes Crutchfield. “Overall, the EP is a warm, kind of vibey recording.”

Justin Sullivan of Night Shop. (Submitted)

Night Shop is the new solo project from Justin Sullivan, drummer for such people and bands as: Kevin Morby, The Babies, and Flat Worms. They are preceded by many more, as he has toured in bands for the past 18 years. His debut e.p. was recorded at Compn’y Studios in Los Angeles, engineered by Drew Fisher (Kevin Morby, The Babies, Girl Pool) and is comprised of world weary, melancholy songs with trace elements of optimism. He was joined in the recording effort by Will Ivy, on electric guitar, and Tim Hellman (Thee Oh Sees) on bass.

Anna St. Louis. (Submitted)

Despite her last name, Anna St. Louis was born and raised in Kansas City. She grew up a painter and singing in punk bands, eventually leaving her hometown to attend art school in Philadelphia. After graduating she made the move to Los Angeles where she began teaching herself guitar, writing songs and recording them on her own in her bedroom. St. Louis wears her influences well – think Patsy Cline singing over John Fahey – but has a style all her own. And while you can take the artist out of the midwest, you can’t take the midwest out of the artist – so let this be known; this is Midwestern music ran through a California filter.

Waxahatchee, Night Shop, and Anna St. Louis will perform at a special Backstage Show at Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio on Thursday, September 13 at 8 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. The audience will sit on the stage with the performers for an intimate concert experience right on the Stuart’s stage.Tickets are available right now, General Admission tickets are $21 in advance or $26 at the door.
