AKRON, Ohio (AP) – A city council in Ohio has ruled residents living in a tent city on private property must leave by Thanksgiving.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports Akron City Council voted Monday to reject a zoning request by local businessman Sage Lewis to keep the homeless camp open.

Lewis has used his commercial property in Middlebury as a campground for the homeless since 2017.

He told city counselors after the vote that they have “thrown all the homeless people out of an airplane without a parachute.”

Councilman Jeff Fusco says the city has an action plan to make sure the tent city’s residents have a “safe landing.”

The plan includes creating a registry of the residents and offering housing within 60 days.
