The Meigs Lady Marauders opened their season in convincing fashion against the Southern Lady Tornadoes. With a dominating 90-24 victory, head coach Jarrod Kasun has to be pleased with the effort that his entire team showed to start the season.

If you had to describe the Lady Marauder’s performance in one word, it would be TEMPO. Coach Kasun said the same after the game, and it was evident on the court, Meigs played suffocating full-court defense and quick offense all night long.

It’s definitely not hyperbole to say that the Lady Marauder’s defense was suffocating, they forced over 30 turnovers and were determined to not give Southern any free trips up the court.

Those turnovers were turned into quick offense by Meigs, with countless baskets coming off of turnovers. The rest of the offense featured quick transition buckets by everyone on the court thanks to great ball movement throughout the contest.

While it’s easy to condemn this Southern team for the lack of offensive production, more credit belongs to that stout Meigs defense and the continuous momentum that the Lady Tornadoes were just never able to stop.

Now if you had to identify one player as the catalyst for Meigs’ dominating performance, it would have to be Kassidy Betzing. Not only did she lead this offense with her 26 points, but it was her pestering defense throughout the night that set the tone for this game.

Such an impressive opening performance from the Lady Marauders definitely establishes them as a force to be reckoned with in this conference. The Lady Tornadoes, on the other hand, will certainly need to make adjustments, but with an entire season to grow, Southern knows that their best basketball is still ahead of them.
