The Ohio Wrestling team showed a lot of potential for the second half of the season during the Southern Scuffle tournament. The team ended  in 8th  place with a field of 30+ teams in Chattanooga, TN. Two Ohio wrestlers placed 4th, Zac Carson and Cameron Kelly.

Zac Carson surprised many with his path to the 157 pound semi-finals. He upset the 2-seed, Paul Fox from Stanford 7-5. He then lost in the semis to Penn State’s Bo Pipher. However, it was not from a lack of effort. Carson initiated and continued the action through scrambles. He was only pinned after multiple scrambles in the match.

He bounced back from the loss to win a close consolation final against Oklahoma State’s Jonce Blaylock. He then continued his offensive approach in the 3rd place match. It was not enough though, losing 12-10 to Stanford’s Dom Mandarino.

Senior Cameron Kelly had a strong showing at 141 pounds for his first performance this season. He lost to Pittsburgh freshman Cole Matthews the first day, where he was dominating until the final seconds. He bounced back all the way to the 3rd and 4th place match with five wins, including a pin against Lock Haven’s Kyle Shoop. However, he lost 3-2 to Navy’s Nick Gil to get 4thplace.

Four other Bobcats were only one match away from placing in the top eight. 125-pounder Shakur Laney medically forfeited for his first match on the second day. Nick Vestal (157), Colt Yinger (165), and Hunter Yeargan (4-0) also lost in the Blood Round.

The Bobcats return to the Convocation Center January 11th. Ohio will take on Missouri at 7:00 p.m. in a MAC matchup.
