COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Gov. Mike DeWine has nominated a licensed physician with more than 30 years of experience in public health and preventive medicine to direct Ohio’s Department of Public Health.

The state’s Republican governor on Tuesday announced the selection of Dr. Amy Acton to lead the department.

A news release from the governor’s office says Acton most recently served as a community research and grants management officer at the Columbus Foundation. She previously had served as an assistant professor at Ohio State University’s College of Public Health and holds a master’s degree in public health from that university.

The release says the director’s role is to lead the department in its mission to protect and improve Ohioans’ health by preventing disease, promoting good health and assuring access to quality care.
