COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s capital city is continuing its rollout of a system that can quickly detect gunshots and their source.

Police in Columbus said Thursday the ShotSpotter detection system is now live in the Linden neighborhood on the north side. It was previously introduced in the Hilltop neighborhood on Columbus’ west side and also will be deployed on the south side.

The system is intended to help police track shootings that go unreported, make it easier to recover evidence and ensure timely medical attention for victims.

The system uses acoustic sensors to pinpoint the location of gunfire. When a gunshot is detected, the system sends a real-time alert to a dispatch center as well as on-patrol officers within 60 seconds.

Canton, Cincinnati and Youngstown are among other Ohio cities deploying the system.
