Ohio Men’s Basketball: Saul Phillips Won’t Return to Ohio Next Season

ATHENS, Ohio —  There will be a new bench boss for the Ohio men’s basketball team next year, as Athletic Director Jim Schaus announced today that Saul Phillips’ contract will not be renewed.

“We are making a change in the leadership of our men’s basketball program. I do not believe that our men’s basketball program, that has a rich tradition of excellence, is where we need to be in terms of consistent, on-court success,” Schaus said, per ohiobobcats.com.

In Phillips’ five year tenure in Athens, the Bobcats posted a record of 81-77, including 14-17 finishes in each of the last two seasons. Ohio finished 10th in the MAC this past season and bowed out to Northern Illinois in the first round of the conference tournament Monday. The Bobcats failed to win a MAC championship or advance to the NCAA Tournament with Phillips at the helm.

“I would like to thank Saul Phillips and his staff for their dedication and service. They created a very positive culture for our student-athletes and did their jobs with the utmost integrity. They are quality people, and I wish them the very best in the future,” Schaus said, per ohiobobcats.com.

A search to fill the head coaching vacancy will begin immediately.
