The Mattson 2 provided the Gladden House Sessions with authentic, psychedelia-tinged jazz pop during their Sunday morning set.

Traveling to the Nelsonville Music Festival all the way from their hometown of San Diego, CA, identical twins Jerrod and Jonathan Mattson put on a groovy performance emboldened with lush guitar riffs and high energy, jazzy percussion.

The twins have been collaborating together since birth. They began playing music in middle school and decades later both received a master’s degree in music from the University of California Irvine. Since officially beginning The Mattson 2 in 2003, they have released numerous albums, most recently 2019’s Paradise (Company Records). Paradise explores the arc of a romantic relationship over the course of 32 riveting, sometimes saddening, and always listenable minutes.

The Mattson 2 began their Gladden House performance with “Essence” (Paradise), followed by “Disco Kid” and “JBS” from their 2017 album crafted with Chaz Bundick (of Toro y Moi), Star Stuff (Company Records). For an encore, the twins performed “Yeppers” from their 2009 album, Ray Barbee Meets the Mattson 2 (Galaxia), which was created with acclaimed guitarist Ray Barbee.
