The Athens Public Library is gearing up for the 7th annual Athens Steampunk Spectacle: Journey to the Center of the Earth Saturday, September 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Steampunk Spectacle, defined as “a creative way to celebrate the wild and wonderful Victorian-era imagination as if it never stopped,” is intended for curious minds, old and young alike. The Spectacle encourages people of all ages to take a deeper look into a time where technological advancements and scientific exploration were rapidly abundant.

Steampunk Spectacle information

Every year, steampunk enthusiasts near and far travel into town for this event. Crafting stations, workshops, high tea, and a special performance by the Twig Theatre of Puppetry are just a few of the many events that will be taking place. Since the event is free and a larger crowd is expected this year, registration for certain crafts is required. Local artist, Steve Richter, crafted the art for brochures and library graphic designer Heather Johnson designed posters, brochures, and a photo backdrop for the event.

Local steampunk group, Airship Athena, aids the Library staff in ensuring the spectacle runs smoothly. The library was chosen as a venue because of the educational opportunity steampunk provides, as well as the involvement of some library staff in Airship Athena.

“Libraries are always looking for ways to offer free, educational, fun programming for as many ages as possible,” said library communications officer Becca Lachman.

Becca also shared some information regarding the silent auction that will be taking place during the spectacle as well. The Athens County Knitters, another local group that meets at the library, makes teacup cozies to be auctioned off in hopes of raising enough money to purchase another bicycle for the Library.”

“(The Athens County Knitters) have made lots and lots of really unique tea cozies- which is very steampunk. Last year they raised enough money to buy a tandem bicycle for the Athens branch, and this year they’re hoping to raise enough money through the silent auction to buy a bicycle that has a side seat so that differently-abled bodies can enjoy a bike ride.”

The Steampunk Spectacle is one of the largest events put on by the Library during the year, and it has only been getting bigger ever since. With so many local groups coming together to put on this event, many steampunks look forward to it each year.
