Nelsonville Teen Charged With Homicide Over Shooting Death Of Young Boy
< < Back toATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — A 14-year-old Nelsonville boy was charged with reckless homicide Friday in connection with the shooting death of another boy.
The boy is accused of causing the death of 11-year-old Eli Spangler by playing with a firearm.
(WOUB is not naming the accused boy because of his age and because his case is being handled through juvenile court.)
Spangler was killed March 6 at a home in Nelsonville. Nelsonville Police Chief Scott Fitch filed the charges Friday following an investigation into Spangler’s death by the Nelsonville Police Department and the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.
The reckless homicide charge in juvenile court would be a third-degree felony if charged as an adult.
Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said the charging decision was delayed pending the result of an autopsy. He said the case remains under investigation and that additional charges against other suspects are possible.
A hearing in this case is scheduled with Athens County Juvenile Court Judge Zach Saunders for Tuesday at 3 p.m.
