NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) – The Athens County Board of Elections have released their results for the races for both at-large and unexpired term seats in the Nelsonville City Council.

Five candidates were running for four at-large positions in the Nelsonville City Council. Three of those candidates, Justin Booth, Elizabeth Jones, and Cory Taylor, were current members running for re-election.

Gregory Clement last served the council in 2005, and chose to run again with the belief that the citizen voice has been lost in Nelsonville. Opha Lawson had no prior experience serving on the council, running his campaign on the stance that the current council neglects the average Nelsonville citizen.

The unofficial results of the Nelsonville City Council race from the Athens County Board of Elections are as follows:

Cory Taylor:            311 votes, 23.2%

Justin Booth:          299 votes, 22.3%

Elizabeth Jones:    299 votes, 22.3%

Gregory Clement:  246 votes, 18.3%

Opha Lawson:       186 votes, 13.9%

Experience prevailed in this race, with Taylor, Booth, Jones, and Clement regaining their seats, leaving Opha Lawson without a position on the city council.

The city council also had two unexpired term positions available, with only two candidates on the ballot guaranteeing their election. Both candidates had prior struggles getting themselves on the council.

Greg Smith withstood multiple attempts by fellow council members to kick him out of  council due to his residency status. Meanwhile, Dan Sherman had two petitions to submit his candidacy for the position rejected by the Athens County Board of Elections before getting his name on the ballot.

Both Smith and Sherman won unopposed to gain a seat on the Nelsonville City Council.
