Strong Lady Vikings squad kicks off tournament play with win over McClain
< < Back to strong-lady-vikings-squad-kicks-off-tournament-play-with-win-over-mcclainMCARTHUR, Ohio (WOUB) — The fourth seeded Vinton County Vikings hosted the thirteenth seeded McClain Tigers Monday night. This DIII matchup Sectional Final matchup was much closer than many could have predicted.
Defense was the name of the game for the Vikings forcing turnovers left and right. The tigers were also playing extremely scrappy defense though they did give up a large number of offensive rebounds. With the scrappy defense the score was kept low through the quarter and Vinton County ended up 9-6.
The second quarter was a similar story as both teams settled into their defensive schemes which again led to extremely low scoring as well as turnovers on both sides. The Vikings went into the half up 18-14.
Vinton County came out of the break on a mission. They caught fire on the offensive end and continued to stifle the McClain offense. The Vikings were led by Cameron Zinn and Lacie Williams who dominated inside and out. Zinn dominated in the paint getting offensive rebounds left and right. Williams led the outside scoring, draining a three to start the run. Vinton COunty was able to double their score scoring 18 points in the third quarter. This gave them a 36-18.
The fourth quarter was more like the first half where the McClain defense shut down the Vikings offense who only had six points until McClain started fouling. Though McClain finally won a quarter, outshooting Vinton County 15-10. Vinton County came out on top 46-33.
Zinn finished the game with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 8 steals. Two steals away from a triple double. Vinton County will take on Jackson in the District Semifinals at Southeastern Highschool Saturday at 3:30.
