Five COVID-related deaths have been reported in Athens County, along with 11 new cases for Feb. 22

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 124 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after five were added to the total Tuesday. The county also has now had 14,205 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 11 new cases were added the same day.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Feb. 22, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the deaths involved two people in their 70s, two people 80 or older and a person in their 60s.

According to ODH data, the cases involved six people 0-19, two people 20-29, one person 30-39, one person 40-49 and one person 70-79.

There are 623 known active cases in the county as of Tuesday and 13,458 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 53.09% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.5% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 16,811 additional doses administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Tuesday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 1,369 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported in the last 24 hours. There were also 124 hospitalizations, 24 ICU admissions and 774 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
