174 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County for July 1-7

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 16,021 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 174 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on July 7, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 32 people 20-29, 30 people 30-39, 29 people 50-59, 26 people 40-49, 20 people 0-19, 13 people 60-69, 13 people 70-79 and 11 people 80+.

One previously confirmed case required hospitalization for a person in their 80s. According to the data, 360 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 415 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 15,461 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 52.92% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.43% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 17,790 first boosters and 3,499 second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 18,838 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 411 hospitalizations and 29 ICU admissions reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
