One COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 343 new cases for Sept. 2-8

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 150 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had had 17,972 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 343 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Sept. 8, 2022.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person in their 70s.

The cases involved 139 people 0-19, 81 people 20-29, 34 people 40-49, 32 people 30-39, 20 people 60-69, 15 people 70-79, 14 people 50-59, eight people 80+.

Six previously confirmed cases required hospitalization for three people in their 20s, two people aged 19 or younger and a person in their 60s. According to the data, 372 people in Athens County have been hospitalized due to complications related to this coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

There are 812 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 17,010 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 53.34% of the county has started the vaccination process and 49.61% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 18,286 first boosters and 4,567second boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 21,731 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 504 hospitalizations, 37 ICU admissions and 86 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
• Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
• Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid contact with people who are sick.
