Gallia Academy squeezes out a clutch win on the road against Coal Grove
< < Back toCOAL GROVE, Ohio (WOUB) — Friday night lights featured a pivotal Ohio-Valley Conference matchup between the Blue Devils of Gallia Academy (7-0) and the Coal Grove Hornets (5-2).
To add an extra layer onto the game it was also military appreciation night at Patterson Field. The fans showed out for what would be a fantastic week seven matchup that Gallia would ultimately take 36-33.
Just minutes into the opening quarter Coal Grove running back Chase Hull would march the ball down the field himself and punched it in for a quick 6-0 lead. Gallia jumped offside on the ensuing point after attempt and that prompted the Hornets to go for two. A hand off to Hull, and the lead was 8-0.
Despite the early deficit the Blue Devils would waste no time crawling right back into the game. Following a kickoff return to the one-yard line, Hudson Shamblin would force the ball in. Gallia attempted a two-point conversion but would be unsuccessful keeping a small two-point lead intact for Coal Grove.
Midway through the second quarter Chase Hall would lead another touchdown drive pushing the lead up to eight. Hall at this point was up to an astonishing 29 touchdowns in just six games.
Gallia trailing 21-14 in the third quarter were led by Hudson Shamblin again to knot the score up at 21. Both teams would score two more times, but with a combination of a missed extra point and a failed two-point try Gallia would find themselves up by three as the clock struck zero.
Coal Grove will travel across town to take on a 7-0 Ironton team next week, while Gallia heads home to take on Rock Hill.
