73 new COVID-19 cases reported in Athens County from Dec. 23-29

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 19,255 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 73 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Dec. 29, 2022.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 14 people 50-59, 12 people 20-29, 11 people 30-39, nine people 70-79, eight people 0-19, seven people 40-49, six people 60-69 and six people 80+.

There are 220 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 18,880 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 54.06% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.42% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,217 first boosters and 9,055 second boosters and 8,697 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 13,047 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 608 hospitalizations, 35 ICU admissions and 88 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
