One COVID-related death has been reported in Athens County, along with 83 new cases for February 3-9

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 157 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after one was added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had had 19,731 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 83 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on February 9, 2023.

Analysis of ODH data indicates the death involved a person in their 70s.

The new cases involved 22 people 20-29, 17 people 0-19, 12 people 50-59, nine people 70-79, eight people 60-69, six people 30-39, five people 80+ and four people 40-49.

There are 244 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 19,330 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 54.11% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.45% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,346 first boosters and 9,448 second boosters and 9,422 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 8,833 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 402 hospitalizations, 23 ICU admissions and 71 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
