85 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Athens County from February 17-23

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 19,905 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 85 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Feb. 23, 2023.

According to ODH data, the cases involved 25 people 20-29, 16 people 40-49, 11 people 0-19, nine people 60-69, eight people 70-79, seven people 30-39, six people 50-59, three people 80+.

There are 219 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 19,529 recovered cases, according to ODH.

A total of 54.11% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50.43% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 19,364 first boosters and 9,498 second boosters and 9,533 updated boosters administered.

Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.

Thursday at 2 p.m., the Ohio Department of Health announced 9,136 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 statewide were reported since last week’s update. There were also 435 hospitalizations, 26 ICU admissions and 71 deaths reported in the same time period.

ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
  • Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
