Eastern Lady Eagles take runner up in Sectional Final after the fall to Notre Dame Lady Titans

PIKETON, Ohio (WOUB) — The Eastern Lady Eagles looked to follow up their Southeast Sectional Title with a District Title against the Notre Dame Lady Titans. Hopes were high for the Lady Eagles after blowing out Paint Valley on Thursday, but the 23-2 Lady Titans were too much for Eastern to handle, falling to the familiar foe in a 69-34 loss.

Eastern found itself down early, falling flat under the glass. The tall Notre Dame squad dominated on the boards with 6’2” guard Annie Dettwiller tallying six rebounds in the first eight minutes. Eastern was down 24-7 to close out the first quarter.

Eastern showed a little bit more fight in the second quarter, containing Notre Dame on the boards and landing three pointers. However, they were still outscored and could not generate scoring opportunities. To add to the struggle, Sidney Reynolds collecting four fouls before halftime. To close the second quarter, Notre Dame lead the Eagles 39-19.

The second half was more of the same, Eastern struggling on the boards and falling victim to the high-flying Notre Dame offense. Ball movement was what won it for Notre Dame, the Lady Titans leading the game with 17 assists, as opposed to Eastern’s eight. Notre Dame finished strong, winning 69-34.

Eastern will finish the season as the sectional champions and the district runners-up. Notre Dame will now move on to the regional semifinals, thanks to Dettwiller’s stat line of 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. This offense runs through her, and it’s paid off so far. Notre Dame now stands just four wins away from winning the state championship.
