NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) – Fresh off the release of her critically acclaimed debut full-length Oh Glistening Onion, The Nighttime is Coming (Spacebomb Records) Nicole Rodriguez (the Brooklyn-based musician who records as Pearla) entranced a curious Saturday afternoon crowd with her distinctive take on indie folk balladry at the 2023 Nelsonville Music Festival.

Rodriguez has been releasing music as Pearla since 2019, when her Quilting and Other Activities EP was released via Egghunt Records, earning her comparisons to everyone from Joni Mitchell to Connie Converse.

With a live line-up consisting of Rodriguez (vocals, guitar, synth) Tyler Postiglione (bass, vocals), Izzy Oram Brown (guitar, vocals), Jack McLoughlin (guitar, pedal steel), and Pele Greenberg (drums, percussion), Pearla performed the bulk of Oh Glistening Onion…,  plus Get in Touch With You, a song released only days before Pearla’s NMF ’23 appearance.

Rodriguez brought the recorded work of Pearla to life with her band’s strong rhythmic and harmonic connection, mixing acoustic, synth, and electric instruments with a kind of contemplative ease.
