WATERFORD OHIO (WOUB) —– Last Friday, the Bishop Tonnos Titans traveled from Canada to take on the Fort Frye Cadets. Since the Titans were traveling from unfamiliar territory for the Cadets, the Cadets didn’t know what to expect. This would be a shootout that would push both teams to their limits.

The 1st half was an odd one. After forcing a three and out, a potential Clayton Miller touchdown as stopped when Blake Elliot stripped the ball causing a touchback. This preceded a long Titan drive where they grabbed a 42-yard field goal. Both teams would have big gains but not be able to capitalize on the field positioning for most of the 1st quarter.

The first touchdown of the game would come halfway through the 2nd quarter when Sebastian Huck found Bryndan Riddle in the endzone for a Cadet score. Bishop Tonnos would respond the next drive with a long, time-consuming drive. This came off the back of Sophomore Quarterback Ryan Begadon. Begadon used his size and speed to stretch plays and make gains similarly to a young Ben Roethlisberger. With just two minutes left in the half, the Titans converted a 4th and goal to take the lead 10-7 at halftime.

After the start of the 2nd half, the offensive floodgates would open as Fort Frye and Bishop Tonnos started trading blows. The 3rd Quarter was particularly crazy with 5 lead changes. There wouldn’t be a punt in the 3rd quarter until there was around 1:30 left. The 3rd quarter would end 28-24 with Fort Frye in the lead.

Once the 4th quarter started, the Cadets would take control of the game. While still up, Fort Frye got the ball with the goal of grabbing some more points while wasting clock. They got more than they bargained for. After a fake punt on their own 29-yard line, the Cadets methodically traveled down the field utilizing a deadly option attack. This 7-minute drive would end in 7 for Fort Frye as all the momentum was on their side. The next drive by the Titans would end as Ryan Begadon’s pass was intercepted sealing their fate. The Cadets would grab another touchdown to run up the score 42-24.

Fullback Ross Schulthesis and receiver Clayton Miller both put up points for Fort Frye, but the key to their offense tonight was Bryndan Riddle. Riddle put up 138 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns as well as that early receiving touchdown. “I owe it to my [Offensive] Line,” he said postgame. “When the line is doing their job it’s pretty easy.”

Coach Huck, despite the lack of preparation, was able to coach his team to a win. “We weren’t really sure what we were getting into. We knew they were a big school, lot a big kids but they hadn’t played a game yet.” Coach Huck will look to continue the momentum of the season when the Cadets host the Warren Warriors next Friday.
