South Point triumphs Coal Grove in a one possession victory

COAL GROVE, Ohio (WOUB) – A seven o’clock start time and cloudy skies surrounding Leemaster Stadium, both football teams were ready to fight in this highly anticipated conference matchup.

The undefeated Hornets wanted to extend their winning streak while the Pointers look to play spoiler and snap Coal Grove’s winning streak.

In the first quarter of this conference matchup, the Pointers were first on the board. Fullback Gage Chapman rushed into the end zone for a South Point touchdown. With a little more than a minute left, the Hornets managed to strike back with a rushing touchdown by the sophomore Kaden Murphy.

The Hornets also had a successful attempt at a two-point conversion thanks to Murphy. At the end of the first quarter, Coal Grove led South Point 8-7.

After an unsuccessful drive in the beginning of the second, the Pointers reclaimed the ball with a fumble from the Hornets at their own 25. South Point rushed into the goal line but fumbled in the end zone. The Hornets recovered the ball.

After the touchback, Landon Roberts ran for 63 yards. Coal Grove eventually came up with a score with five minutes to go in the second thanks to Kaden Murphy.

Coal Grove’s seven point lead came to an end with a 23-yard rushing touchdown coming from the senior Eli Wilburn with a little over 2 minutes left in the second. After the touchdown from the pointers, Coal Grove threw an interception.

The Pointers took little to no time to score with a 20 yard passing strike to Junior Brayden Hanshaw. With a 19-14 lead, Southpoint proceeded to score the two-point conversion caught by Gage Chapman.

In the third quarter, Eli Wilburn struck again. This time, Wilburn reversed and sped right past the defense for a touchdown. South Point extended their lead 27-14 with 8:15 left to play in the third. Coal Grove responded with a rushing touchdown by Kaden Murphy once again.

South Point was quick to fight back and Wilburn scored once more on the ground.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Pointers lead the Hornets 33-20. Coal Grove charged down the field and fumbled the ball at the goal line. After getting another shot to score, Coal Grove finally capitalized but couldn’t overcome the Pointers. The South Point Pointers defeated the Coal Grove Hornets with a score of 33-26.

After the loss, Coal Grove fell to 3-1 and will host their next matchup which is against Chesapeake.

After defeating the unbeatable Hornets, the Pointers will host the Ironton Fighting Tigers.
