ATHENS, OH – The WOUB Public Media YouTube page has just hit a major milestone. Content on the channel has been viewed more than 10 million times.

“We are thrilled to know that the content WOUB is posting on its YouTube page is providing news, sports and information, as well as educational and arts and cultural entertainment content to people in the way they want to view it,” said WOUB General Manager Mark Brewer. “Providing content to people where they are is important, and YouTube is one way many prefer to watch video content from WOUB.”

The channel launched on January 17, 2008. That first year, WOUB was excited to end up with more than 36,000 views. In 2022, that number was just under 755,000.

The videos ranked with the top 10 most views over the last 15 years include a 2013 interview with Social Media Influencer Logan Paul when he was a freshman at Ohio University (2,173,527 views), a 2012 Bobcat Sports Showcase video about the art of slap hitting in softball (143,240) and six videos from WOUB’s Nelsonville Music Festival series called Gladden House Sessions (Now Sycamore Sessions). In fact, nearly 30% of WOUB’s YouTube video views came from Gladden House/Sycamore Sessions, which is a partnership between the Nelsonville Music Festival, the Ohio University Scripps College of Communication’s Media Arts & Studies Program and WOUB. Top performers include artists like Tyler Childers, Sierra Ferrell, Lake Street Dive and Mandolin Orange.

As digital streaming has gained more traction in recent years, full episodes of WOUB programs like NewsWatch, Gridiron Glory and Hardwood Heroes are streamed live to the WOUB YouTube channel. Many people watch the programs on YouTube while they are being broadcast live, while others view them later at a time that works in their schedule.

“WOUB has recently started producing more local series that are focused on digital distribution first and foremost,” said Brewer. “As more of that content is released and placed on our YouTube channel, I only see more people using the WOUB YouTube channel. I don’t think it will take us 15 years to reach another 10 million views.”
