WAVERLY, Ohio (WOUB) — The South Webster Jeeps and the Alexander Spartans met in Waverly to see who would advance to the district finals.

Both teams hit the court hot, but the Jeeps took an early lead. The Spartans recovered quickly thanks to their powerful front line and a couple errors from South Webster, going up 16-13. The two teams traded service errors before the Spartans had enough errors to allow for a Jeeps comeback. The set ended in errors, with South Webster putting away the first set 25-23.

In the second set the Jeeps went on a seven-point run, under the serve of Lauren Kaltenbach, putting Alexander in a score deficit early. The Spartans went on a four-point run of their own to eat away at the gap, but they were not able to regain the energy they played with in the first set.

“Second set came out and it was like ‘oh no’,” said Alexander Head Coach Jaime Lutz. “We couldn’t finish, we dropped it, it was not playing scared but just not playing aggressive.”

South Webster’s Isabella Claxon and Mia Crum helped lead the Jeeps’ attack. Claxon had six kills in the second set and Crum had three. South Webster won the second 25-11.

The third set began as a back-and-forth affair, but the Jeeps pulled away under the serve of Sidney Keslar. During the seven-point run, Keslar scored an ace. South Webster was in the driver’s seat for much of the set. They pushed the tempo and found the gaps in Alexander’s defense. Late in the third set Spartan Lexi Grissett gave her team a small momentum boost with a couple kills of her own. The game ended with a Brea Shupert kill to make the score 25-14.

The Spartans end the season with a 13 and 11 overall record and an 8-4 conference record. They lose three seniors, Lexi Grissett, Trista Johnson, and Macie Swart.

“Coming up next year, we’re young,” said Lutz. “We have one returning four-letterman and she’s my right side, so we have some holes to fill. We have a lot of potential.”

South Webster continues their undefeated season and will move to the district final against the Meigs Marauders on Saturday at 11am in Waverly.
