ATHENS, OH – Ken Dobo’s passion for media and media access in Appalachia started well before he landed the position of broadcast technology specialist at WOUB.

“I was a founding member of the private non-profit, ‘Appalachian Media Access Center’ which provided free equipment and training to members of the public producing programming for the cable access television channel in Athens, Ohio,” said Dobo. “After that, starting in 2007, I worked for Ohio University providing media and IT support. I also operated a media production company and did independent production in Athens for many years.”

Dobo is originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa and earned two degrees from Ohio University, a Bachelor of Science in telecommunication and a Master of Arts in Media Arts and Studies. As a broadcast technician at WOUB, Dobo supports WOUB’s numerous remote transmitter locations throughout our service area. Dobo started working for WOUB in the spring of 2023 and says he likes the variety of locations and projects that he gets to work on.

“Maintaining high quality and consistent broadcast service is important for listeners and viewers,” said Dobo. “They need to know they can count on WOUB for information and entertainment. I grew up with PBS, and it still fills an important role in the media landscape providing people with educational and cultural programming.”

When Dobo is not at WOUB, he enjoys traveling and exploring his cultural heritage.

“I am half Hungarian, half Scandinavian.  I have been lucky to visit Hungary many times.”
