Sappington is the second person to announce their candidacy for the position since Ric Wasserman said he will not be running again.

Beth Clodfelter, who was elected to a two-year term on the Athens City Council in November, announced two weeks ago that she is running for treasurer.

Clodfelter was a budget unit manager for Ohio University and also worked as a regional representative for Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown.

The candidates, both Democrats, will face off in the March primary along with any other Democrats who declare their candidacy before the deadline next week.

So far, no Republican candidate has entered the race.

Voters will choose the new treasurer in next November’s election for a four-year term that will begin in September 2025.

Sappington has served as Nelsonville’s auditor for four years. He cites among his accomplishments helping Nelsonville maintain its status as a city after the latest census and recovering hundreds of thousands of dollars the city was owed.
