The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes welcomed the Wellston Golden Rockets to Ben Wagner Gymnasium for a conference matchup on senior night. The Buckeyes celebrated their two seniors Keagan Swope and Andrew Connor who led NY in a dominant win 73-33 win over Wellston.

The Buckeyes came out hot in the first with back-to-back threes from Keagan Swope and Bryant Call. The shots would continue to fall in NY’s direction for the remainder of the quarter as the team racked up five total threes. The first quarter ended with a score of 22-5 Nelsonville-York.

The Buckeyes offense would continue their run into the second half led by eight points from Andrew Conner. Working in unison with their offensive tear it was NY’s defense that was the shining star of the half. Despite a hard fight by Wellston the Buckeye defense would force seven total turnovers in the first half alone. This game headed into halftime with a score of 42-15 and a 27-point lead for NY.

The second half was much of the same as the Buckeyes maintained a 30-point lead throughout forcing a running clock. NY had an impressive half statistically putting up 31 points compared to Wellston’s 18.

The Buckeye’s senior night energy would continue throughout the entire game with Keagan Swope racking up six threes, seven assists and seven steals while his senior counterpart had four rebounds and two blocks on the night. Despite the loss Wellston’s Wes Briggs fought for his team putting up nine total rebounds.

At the end of the day the Golden Rockets could not stop the Buckeye’s momentum and this game ended with a score of 73-33 Nelsonville York.

After the game we talked to NY Head Coach Blaine Gabriel about the way the team was able to dominate tonight.

“We wanted to set the tone and make sure we sent the seniors out with a win tonight, and we came out with a lot of intensity, and it showed.”

These two teams will be gearing up for their next matches as Nelsonville York will head down the road to Athens on Friday for their last regular season game, and Wellston will welcome Clay at home on Tuesday.
